Open Book

Open Book is an online-only branch of Passager. We will periodically give out writing prompts, and responses will be published using technology from issuu.com to generate an e-book. Participation and reading Open Book is free and open to the public. Stay tuned for our prompts!

Open Book Prompt 1, Deadline June 1!

To spread the word about the release of Passager’s newest book of poems, Hot Flash Sonnets, by Moira Egan, we are printing one of her poems here, and encourage you to write a response to the poem. It can be another poem, a story, an anecdote, art, etc. A few of our favorites will be published online here on Open Book!

Submissions must be emailed to editors@passagerbooks.com with the subject line “What the Flesh Is Heir To.” Submissions sent as email attachments must use .doc, .pdf, or .jpeg files. There is no word count limitation, though we advise you to keep prose to a length under 2,000 words. The deadline is June 1, 2013. Happy writing, and be sure to spread the word to your friends and writing groups!

What the Flesh Is Heir To, by Moira Egan
excerpt from Hot Flash Sonnets, coming soon

Our mothers never told us there’d be days
(and weeks and months and years) like this; you think
they took a vow of silence? Anyway,
I think somebody needs to make a kit
like the one they gave out in sixth grade,
the pads and belts, Something Happens to Girls:
it’s normal, said the booklet, don’t be afraid.
I need a book like that, with homey pearls
of woman wisdom for this later stage.
Dear Kimberly-Clark, We have some suggestions.
We need Kleenex, Lightdays, and also sage
advice about the menopausal question:
To HRT or not. Soy? Calcium?
And could you please throw in some Halcion?
